Chico Hot Springs, a great way to bookend your ski trip to northern Yellowstone.  :)

The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

March 5, 2016 B. Fredlund

Over the last four days we made the ski pilgrimage to the Grand Canyon (the heart the Yellowstone caldera).  It was incredible!

Two trips over Mt. Washburn, and close to 40 miles of travel didn't come easy, but it was an  adventure ski we will long remember.   :)

Yellowstone ski conditions update

February 27, 2016 B. Fredlund

Update on the backcountry skiing conditions around Yellowstone:  sunshine and warm daytime temperatures the last week or so.  The valleys have felt like spring, while winter has definitely held on in the alpine.

The upper elevation snowpack has been healing, allowing for some excellent opportunities for travel into alpine terrain.  Powder skiing can still be found on northerly aspects, while the lower elevation southerly aspects have experienced a brief corn skiing cycle.

Conditions are generally variable and wind effected, but there is some fantastic XC skiing to be done down around the Lamar, and boot-top powder if you know where to look.

The wildlife viewing has been excellent (as usual), with grizzly bears reportedly observed roaming the Interior.  And there is another series of snow storms in on the way.
